Homemade Kitchen Wisdom from Alana Chernila

“Do Your Best, and Then Let Go”

So reads one of the 13 chapters- and morsels- of kitchen wisdom in Alana Chernila‘s new cookbook, “The Homemade Kitchen.” This is a book whose message is as much about how to approach life at a slow, measured and pleasurable pace as it is about about cooking with the same intentions.

THE HOMEMADE KITCHEN

“Start Where You Are.” “Feed Yourself.” “Put Your Hands in the Earth.” “Do the Work.” “Slow Down.” Alana has these phrases and others taped to her refrigerator. I do the same thing on mine with inspirational quotations such as: “Just as the Caterpillar thought the world was coming to an end, she became a butterfly.” “Don’t be pushed by your problems. Be led by your dreams.” This latter quote is the lead in my second book, “Fearless Fabulous You! Lessons on Living Life on Your Terms.”

Feeding your body also nourishes your soul. The kitchen is both heart and hearth for many home cooks, including Alana. She says, “The process of cooking at home is my window into what I want to create in life as a whole.”

If the kitchen is the heart of her home, her gardens are the arteries. Alana looks to nature for inspiration in the kitchen and shares practical insights to working with and not against it, from honoring the ingredients to utilizing bits and pieces and not being wasteful.

I’m a fan of the section of “The Homemade Kitchen” that address waste and re-purposing different foods, something I am just learning to do in an effort to be more respectful of the fact than we live in a nation of abundance where too many still go hungry.

“The Homemade Kitchen” is a follow up to Alana’s first book, “The Homemade Pantry.” You can also follow her blog, Eating from the Ground Upwww.eatingfromthegroundup.com

Food Politics with Marion Nestle- The Connected Table LIVE April 22

When the latest research on a food or nutrition comes out….when the U.S. Government shifts left, right or sideways on a topic concerning food or nutrition policy…..or when a journalist wants an authoritative quote from a respected and reliable source….Marion Nestle is on speed dial.

Time Magazine included her Twitter among its top 10 in health and science; Michael Pollan ranked her as the #2 most powerful foodie in America (after Michelle Obama), and Mark Bittman ranked her #1 in his list of foodies to be thankful for.

And we are honored to have Marion Nestle on The Connected Table LIVE April 22, 2pm ET. It’s a full show focused on Food Politics and what you need to know about the foods you eat.

Catching the Wholesome Wave with Food Activist Michel Nischan

Some people let change happen to them. Others see opportunities to make change happen for others. Chef and Food Activist Michel Nischan, President and CEO of Wholesome Wave, is a leading example of the latter. Michel joins us on The Connected Table LIVE April 8, 2pm ET on W4CY

Michel-Nischan
Michel Nischan, Wholesome Wave

I first met Michel when he was a rock n’ roll chef at his restaurant Miche Mache in Connecticut. I’ve followed his career through his restaurants (Heartbeat at the W Hotel in Manhattan, The Dressing Room in CT)  and books Sustainably Delicious (Rodale),  Taste Pure and Simple  and Homegrown Pure and Simple (both Chronicle Books).

Michel has been a food activist long before other chefs were starting to flex their muscles and their mouths on the subject.  Growing up in a farming family, food production and appreciation for sustainable agriculture is in his genetic root stock.

In 2007, Michel  founded Wholesome Wave  with Gus Schumacher, former Undersecretary of Agriculture for Food & Foreign Services, as Founding Board Chair, and the late Michael Batterberry, Founder of Food Arts Magazine, as Founding Board Member. In 2008, Wholesome Wave piloted the Double Value Coupon Program at 12 markets in three states. Since then, the organization has launched numerous initiatives, including the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription Program and Healthy Food Commerce Investments and is recognized as a compelling model for expanding regional food access.
